Why, radical you, of course!! DUH!

From schotz on Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 21:50:01

are you two from a different planet? :)

From jelmo on Wed, Oct 01, 2008 at 13:10:53

it's WHY

From Nevels on Wed, Oct 01, 2008 at 14:52:39

Not to show off how nerdy I really am, or anything, but, upon seeing the response from my ever inimitable mother, I can't help but think:

"Why, radical you" = y(u^(1/2))

Square that: (y(u^(1/2)))^2

You get: (y^2)(u) = yyu = y yu

What do you get when you square "Why, radical you?"

y yu; why, you, of course.

Is it a bad sign that I thought of that?

From Inimitable Mother on Wed, Oct 01, 2008 at 18:13:19

Yep, I'd definitely be worried if I were you, especially since it makes perfect sense to me!!

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Oct 01, 2008 at 18:44:45

Another twist on this question. You for the person who is asking, is really I for me. Therefore:

sqrt(i) = sqrt(2)/2 * (1+i)

And some more:

Who are you? sqrt(-1)

sqrt(-1) ran 6 miles today.

And while we are at it, a Russian math joke. They told the residents of an insane asylum that they would be differentiated. Everybody started taking showers, shaving, etc. One guy just sits and does nothing. They ask him - what about you? He says, I do not care, I am the exponential function.

I don't know which is scarier, the thread we're having, or the fact that I'm following all of it AND catching the humor.

From Inimitable Mother on Wed, Oct 01, 2008 at 22:11:49

OK, so while we're on the subject of math jokes, here's a little limerick by that most prolific of all authors, Anonymous:

A burlesque dancer, a pip

Named Virginia, could peel in a zip;

But she read science fiction

And died of constriction

Attempting a Mobius strip!

PS -- sqrt(-1) only ran 2 today.
